The P45 form is the official termination of employment form used in the UK (not anymore in Ireland).

Since 1st of January 2019, filling in a P45 form is not compulsory. Instead, as an employer, you can enter your employee's leaving date when submitting the details of the final pay.

What is the P45 form?

The P45 form is used as a proof to the HMRC for the taxes and NIC (National Insurance Contributions) that an employee have paid on his salaries and pays from the beginning of the tax year (6th of April) to his final day of working for the company.

Is the P45 form mandatory?

No. Since 1st of January 2019, filling out a P45 form when your employee leaves your business is not a legal requirement. Nonetheless, if you ask a P45 form to your employer, it is a legal obligation for him to give it to you - no matter the reason for your leaving.

What do I have to fill in my P45 form?

In the HMRC P45 form used in the UK, you will have to complete:

  • Your personal data : name, surname, national insurance number and payroll number
  • Your pay and income tax details from the beginning of the current tax year to the day you left your company
  • Other details that can affect your taxes amount - if you have a current student loan to reimburse for example.

What is the difference between p60 form and p45 form?

Those two forms respond to different uses. Whereas the p60 form is used to declare the taxes you have paid on your salaries for one regular tax year, the p45 form applies when you are leaving your work. That is why the p45 form full name is "“Details of employee leaving work”.
