Good to know

The v317 form is the official DVLA document to transfer your registration number off a vehicle to another one

What is a V317 form?

The V317 form that you can download above in a printable version is the official DVLA application to keep a vehicle's registration number and transfer it to another car or vehicle.

You can make the transfer either for a vehicle you are buying, from another vehicle you are using in your name, but also to someone's else car.

Can I fill in the V317 form online?

You can download a PDF version of the V317 form above and send it to the DVLA Swansea office. However, you must know that there are some delays with paper applications. The easiest way to fill in the application to keep your registration number and put it on another vehicle is to do it online through the official government website.

You can either:

  • take a registration number of your current vehicle;
  • transfer it to another one.

How to fill in a v317 form?

You will basically have to opt one of the two options proposed on the v317 online form:

Option AIf you want to take the vehicle registration number off and put it directly onto another vehicle
Option BIf you want to take the number off a vehicle and keep it on a retention document for a period that can go up to 10 years
The two option proposed on the v317 form

Depending the case, you will have to provide details such as :

  • Details of the person applying to the v317
  • Details of the vehicle you are taking the registration number off
  • Details of the vehicle you want to pass on the registration number

Before you send everything to the DVLA, double-check that your v317 form is well completed.

What if I'd like to transfer a registration number to someone else's car?

If you'd like to transfer the registration number to someone else's vehicle instead of a car in your name, you will need to include to your application the V62 registration form as well as a £80 payment.

Both you and the vehicle's owner will need to fill in the V317 form.

Watch out!

V317, how long does it take to transfer the registration number?

Whilst filling in the form, you can either choose between:

  • Option A: you can take the registration number off a vehicle and put it straight to another one.
  • Option B: you can keep it for 10 years.

How much does transferring a registration number cost?

The cost for transferring the registration number or keep it on a retention document for 10 years is £80.

What do I need to include to my V317 form?

Along with the official v317 form filled in, you will need to include:

  • your car insurance certificate;
  • your vehicle's V5C logbook or registration certificate (if you don't have any, use the V62 form to ask for one).

Your vehicle must be taxed or have a Statutory Off Road Notification.

How to keep my personalised number plate?

Every vehicle in the UK must have a unique registration number displayed clearly at the front and back of the vehicle.

A personalised or private plate lets you add your own touch such as your initials, date of birth or job description to an otherwise boring set of numbers and letters.

If you have bought a private number plate and you'd like to keep it on your new vehicle, use the V317 DVLA number plate transfer or retention form.

Where to send my v317 form?

Once you have properly completed your v317 form appliction, you must send it - along with all the requested document - to the following post address : DVLA Personalised Registrations, Swansea SA99 1DS.

Do not forget to enclose £80 fee you owe the DVLA for transferring your vehicle registration number.
